We can all agree that running is an excellent way to work out. However, there are days when your body needs to recover or you need to focus on different aspects of your training.

In our previous blog posts, we’ve talked about mixing up your routine to avoid injury or trying other workouts on your recovery days. Here are five different workouts that can help you build on your training and improve your running.

Yoga
  • Yoga is a spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation.
  • Works your core, quads, hamstrings and hip flexors.
  • Think about stretching, strength and flexibility.
  • Yoga also helps improve your posture and alignment.
  • It helps prevent injuries.
Lifting Weights
  • Works all the muscles you use to run.
  • Think about becoming stronger and faster.
  • It helps prevent injuries.
Swimming
  • Swimming allows you to work all of your muscles without pounding the pavement.
  • Think about your endurance and breathing.
  • It helps prevent injuries.
Zumba
  • Zumba mixes low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party.
  • A total workout that combines all the elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility and boosted energy.
  • Classes are easy to follow, instructor lead and have a fun playlist.
Barre Classes
  • Barre classes are a total body workout that incorporates a ballet barre to perform small, isometric movements. Learn more about barre classes like Pure Barre.
  • Think about flexibility and strength.
  • Works your glutes, thighs and core.

Bonus: You don't have to pay fess for classes and gyms. Here are three things you can go outside and do right now:

Walking – Take a brisk walk around a nearby park.

Biking – Hop on your bike and ride around your neighborhood.

Hiking – Indiana has some great places to hike. Visit Yellowwood State Forest, Spring Mill State Park, Brown County State Park or McCormick’s Creek State Park. Check out our parks and trails blog for other locations to explore.

All of these are great activities to help get you moving and help you recover after a long week of training.
