How to Get Started Running

Get Started Running

Ever wonder how your neighbors got started running or why they enjoy running around the neighborhood so early in the morning?

Are you thinking about finally getting out there and pounding the pavement to lose a few pounds or get yourself in better shape?

Here are some tips to help motivate you to get started.

Take It Slow

Running works lots of different muscles and can be exhausting on your body. Try running a few days a week and then build up your speed, endurance and mileage as you get comfortable. Don't push yourself too hard or too fast. You'll end up with an injury. Your first few weeks of running should be relaxed. As you get into a groove.

Keep a Running Log

Write about your running! Use a journal or an app to keep track of your running habits. Include where you ran, what the weather was like, how you felt during the run and anything else that comes to mind. On a hard day, you can look back at your log and see how you're making progress.

Use an App

When first starting out it's helpful to use an app to assist with your training. The couch to 5K is a perfect example because it incorporates walking and running in intervals. Check out our previous blog post for more information about the Couch to 5K program and 5 of Our Favorite Apps.

Train with a Group

Learn tips and tricks from other runners. Ask them about their experiences, what works for them and what doesn't. Some running groups even have weekly or monthly challenges. Running with a group also allows you to meet new friends in your community.

Just Run

Add running to your weekly routine. The more you go out and run the more you'll love it. Races like Rock the Block Run are a lot of fun especially when you run with your friends. Crossing the finish line at a race is an amazing feeling.
